Australian Blueprint for Career Development
Sometimes random and unexpected events can alter our plans. It is important to remember that the attitudes and skills needed to survive and flourish in times of change can be learnt.
The Australian Blueprint for Career Development outlines eleven competencies that will help people to effectively negotiate and manage their careers in the dynamic environment of the 21st century.
The main aim of the Blueprint is to guide the design of career development programs in schools, universities and workplaces. However, it is useful for you, as a parent, to have an idea about what these competencies are, and to know that there are practical ways you can provide an environment for your child to learn and practice these skills from a very young age.
Personal Management Competencies
You can help your child to effectively manage themselves and their relationships by encouraging them to:
-
build and maintain a positive self-image
-
interact positively and effectively with others
-
change and grow throughout life.
Learning and Work Exploration Competencies
You can help your child to gather information about education and work and develop the skills needed to:
-
participate in life-long learning supportive of career goals
-
locate and effectively use career information
-
understand the relationship between work, society and the economy.
Career Building Competencies
With interest and support from family members, friends, teachers and career development practitioners, young people will learn how best to:
-
secure/create and maintain work
-
make career enhancing decisions
-
maintain balanced life and work roles
-
understand the changing nature of life and work roles
-
understand, engage in and manage the career building process.
