Frequently Asked Questions

Need answers? Below are some of myfuture’s most frequently asked questions to help you assist your child to plan their career. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for contact us .

Q: My son doesn’t know what he wants to do when he leaves school. Where can I find out about apprenticeship options available to him?

Many young people learn best by doing. If your son is uncertain about his future, it may be wise for you both to talk to a Career Adviser or a Vocational Education and Training (VET) Co-ordinator about career development learning opportunities that his school provides.

It is likely that there may be hands-on opportunities for him to engage in community work or gain work experience, or start studying and working in a vocational area while still at school. Being able to test- drive different work roles should help.

Q: How can I help my child make a successful transition from school to work?

Helping your child make a successful transition starts long before the time that your child takes the final step from school to further education or work.

To support your child through this transition stage you can:

  • ensure they possess effective personal management skills
  • provide opportunities to learn about and explore rich learning and work possibilities
  • provide skills and attitudes to build happy and productive careers.

If, however, you require any assistance, there is support and services available to help with this transition. Contact your local school or check out the services that are available through Career Advice Australia at www.careeradviceaustralia.gov.au

You can also research different options your child may want to explore when they finish school by searching the myfuture Industries section. There you will find information, links and contact information about different industries and specific jobs they may wish to pursue.
