Before you start

Starting a new job can be stressful but you can make things easy for yourself on your first day. Here are a few simple things you can do.

Get a tax file number

A tax file number (TFN) is an identification number that the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) issues to you.

You should obtain a TFN before you start at your new job, and advise your employer of it, if you want your earnings to be taxed at the right rate.

To get a TFN, fill out an application form ('Tax file number application or enquiry for an individual') from the ATO. Forms are available from:

When you apply for a TFN, be prepared to provide proof of your identity. The documents you'll need are listed on the second page of the instructions for the TFN application form.

Your TFN is mailed to your postal address within 28 days of you lodging your application. In the meantime, the ATO will issue you with a temporary TFN to use until your official one arrives.

For more information about Australian tax obligations, go to the Australian Taxation Office site [opens in new window].

Plan your wardrobe

Plan what you're going to wear during the first week of work. You might be tired after work during that first week, so organising your clothes in advance will take some pressure off you.

Wash and iron your clothes ready to go. Do any mending that needs doing, like replacing buttons or sewing up loose threads.

Remember, you'll want to wear your most conservative outfits to begin with, until you see what is appropriate dress for your workplace.

Plan your route

Plan the route you'll take to work. You want to arrive on time, particularly in the first week. Work out some alternative routes, just in case there are traffic delays or you miss a bus.

If you aren't used to travelling the route to work, complete a trial run. Remember, the journey may take longer at peak hour than at other times of the day.
