Industries and occupations in growth and decline

Young woman

Industries constantly grow and decline. As industries grow they offer more jobs, while less jobs are available as industries decline.

Industry growth and decline can impact on regional population and employment. For example, the discovery of mineral resources in a region can lead to growth in the mining industry, which leads to population and employment growth in that region.

Occupations also grow and decline, and growing occupations offer better job prospects than occupations in decline. New occupations are likely to emerge because of:

  • the demand for new blends of skills
  • a preference for employees who can perform a variety of tasks in a team-based workplace.

You can use myfuture to research both industries and occupations. On the occupations facts sheets you can find job outlook information under the heading “Labour Market”. You can also find information on job vacancies for occupations and industries that interest you.
