A wide range of industries is involved in providing goods and services to people. Each industry is made up of groups of enterprises of all sizes, which perform related work. For example, some business enterprises within the agriculture industry are livestock, dairy and horticulture.

There are three levels of industry:

  • Primary industry involves farming, fishing or obtaining useful natural resources through, for example, forestry, agriculture or mining.
  • Secondary industry processes and refines resources, and manufactures products (for example, cars and trucks, printed matter, textiles).
  • Tertiary industry sells and markets products and provides services such as transport and health care.

Some industries combine these three levels. For example, the agriculture industry is a range of interconnected enterprises known as agribusiness, which combines primary (farming), secondary (production, refining) and tertiary (marketing, distribution) industries.
